Opening note
References are useful when they reveal principles. They become limiting when they are treated as finished answers.
Extract the principle
We separate a reference into behaviors: scale, rhythm, contrast, sequence, and emotional temperature. The specific composition is left behind.
Those principles are then tested against the voice, content, and constraints of the new project. Anything without a clear reason is removed.
Originality arrives through translation: the reference starts the conversation, but the project determines the final form.
A useful reference should open questions rather than close them. We ask why a particular proportion feels calm, why an image sequence builds tension, and which cultural associations the work carries with it.
Prototypes make that analysis concrete. By rebuilding only the underlying behavior with new material, we can see whether the idea is durable or whether its appeal depended on the original execution.
The strongest outcome often combines several distant influences with something specific to the client: an operational constraint, an unexpected phrase, or a detail found in their own archive.
